Force-Multipliers

In the siege of Cimic House, Al Amara, Iraq, Sgt Dan Mills, PWRR in his book Sniper One described how they were in serious danger of being overrun. One action which changed the course of the battle was the ingenius use of mortar fire. The mortars were aimed at piles of stones which had the effect of many more than one mortar round; one mortar multiplied its effect several times over and was thus a Force-Multiplier.

There is an amazing story in the Bible about Elijah and his apprentice (think Padawan, if you’re a Star Wars fan) Elisha. Elijah had single-handedly out-performed all the many hundred prophets of Baal, proving that his God was the true God, and the Baals false and powerless. When Elijah was eventually taken into heaven on a fiery chariot, his mantel, or cloak, fell, literally, to Elisha. In a way, Elisha becomes the new Elijah, representing God’s interests on the earth, only he prays for and is able to perform twice as many miracles than even Elijah did.

Fast-forward to the ascension, where Jesus is bodily taken to heaven. As He goes, like Elijah, he too allows His ‘mantel’ to fall, metaphorically, upon His disciples. There was only one Jesus, but commissioning His followers with the power to do what He was doing, meant that much more could be done. Jesus sent His own Spirit, like a mantel, to fill and empower them to ‘go to all the world’ with His message of hope—that people can be saved from their slavery to sin, and find new life in Him.

Mankind was made in God’s image and were always meant to be His Force-Multipliers. God is spirit, and was able to express His mind and character through all that He made—the earth, the heavens, the creatures and us in close relationship with Him. We, then, were meant to be His physical keepers on the earth, tending and caring for it. When sin entered the equation through Satan, it all went wrong and we end up with how things are today—mankind in slavery to sin, the world in a mess and us in a broken relationship with God. Jesus’ coming has enabled a reversal: that we can become again what we once were—back in relationship with Him and with the promise of an eternal re-org (reunion)—being once again His Force-Multipliers on earth.

We could see Jesus as God’s Force-Multiplier too. He was all that God is in-essence and character, so that if you want to know what God is really like, you must look at Jesus and what He was like.

“Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God … for God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.”

Colossians 1:15, 20
